Course
Description: This
is a discussion day based on the Red House Children's Book Award shortlists.
(Please see overleaf for more information on the award.) Each school
will be able to send six pupils to the discussion day. Pupils will be
expected to have read all the books in the categories nominated, and
to be willing to discuss the titles within their discussion groups.
There will be two separate sessions to take account of the wide variety
of ages of participating schools, and both sessions will include a talk
by our guest speaker Andy Stanton, the author of "You're A Bad
Man, Mr Gum!" which was the overall winner of the 2007 Red House
Children's Book Award.

In 2008, the National Year Of Reading, the Schools Library Service is
very pleased to be running the Children's Choice event in conjunction
with the Red House Children's Book Award. This book prize is organise
by the Federation of Children's Book Groups and is the only major book
award in the UK that is judged entirely by children.
Pupils can become
involved early on by nominating books for the long list, via the Red
House web site (www.redhousechildrensbookaward.co.uk). The Award is
divided into three categories: books for younger children, books for
younger readers and books for older readers. Each category has its own
winner, and there is also an award for the overall winner. Schools may
like to discuss books in all the categories back at school; on the Children's
Choice day pupils will be able to choose one or two categories for discussion
in groups.
This year schools
wishing to come will be informed of the shortlist via email on 18th
February 2008. There are three or four books short listed in each age
category. Schools will be able to purchase any books from the shortlist
through the Schools Library Service, or they can make their own arrangements
for obtaining the books.
