Teachers as writers -
taking the fear out of teaching poetry

Poetry class training day with Coral Rumble

Thursday 3rd July 2008 : 9.30 a.m. - 3.30 p.m.

Course description:
Hertfordshire Schools Library Service is working in conjunction with The Poetry Society to bring you this training session and resources to encourage creative writing.
It begins with the premise that teachers are creative themselves, and should be given the time away from the classroom to cultivate their creative side.
The day is designed to 'infect' teachers with a new enthusiasm to write, which will then be highly contagious when they return to their pupils, so that they are able to present poetry in a more exciting and refreshing way in the classroom.
Coral Rumble will take teachers through three sessions looking at what a poem is, what it does, and then to explore both the forms of poetry and free verse. Coral promises that all sessions will be "non-threatening and kind to teachers!"

Suitable for: KS2/3 teachers and other interested staff

Tutor: Coral Rumble specialises in writing and performing poetry for children. She is featured in 'Favourite Poets' published by Hodder Children's Books as well as many other books and anthologies. Coral has worked with all key stages in numerous schools, where she feels at home having once been a teacher herself.

Venue: Schools Library Service, New Barnfield, Travellers Lane, Hatfield AL10 8XG

Cost: £131.00 per person including a buffet lunch

Topics to be covered will include:
  • The Heart of the Poem - the fundamental elements that make a poem 'tick'.
  • Verse forms, patterns and shapes, writing to entertain.
  • Writing free verse and using your abilities to explore and imagine as you write.

At the end of the session you will:

  • Have explored your own creative side.
  • Have investigated different forms of poetry.
  • Be fired with enthusiasm to pass onto your colleagues and pupils.

Copies of 'The Poetry Book for Primary Schools' (ed. Anthony Wilson) or 'Jumpstart Poetry in the Secondary School' (ed. Cliff Yates) will be available for purchase on the day.

The Poetry Society's Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award anthologies, posters from Poems on the Underground along with lesson plans and other materials to use in the classroom will be available free on the day.
