Thursday
13th November 2008 : 9.00 - 12.00
Course
description:
Off the Shelf is
aimed at maintaining young people's reading enthusiasm by providing
a stimulating and enjoyable reading list that will encourage debate
about reading. It is also intended to help sixth form students make
a successful transition into adult reading by introducing a variety
of authors and formats. Schools Library Service provides each participating
school with the books and a support pack to help staff organise events
in school.
This year we have chosen the theme of "screen reads" for our
event as this links with the National Year of Reading theme for the
month of November.
Suitable
for:
Y12/13 students. In reality many are studying English Literature
but this is certainly not a prerequisite. Students will be expected
to read all the shortlisted titles. If they attend the discussion event
at Schools Library Service, they will participate in the group discussion
of the shortlist.
Guest
Speaker:
Deborah Moggach grew up surrounded by writers; her father Richard
Hough wrote over 100 books while her mother wrote and illustrated books
for children. Deborah herself is the author of many short stories and
16 novels including two that are semi-autobiographical (You must be
sisters and Close to home). She has adapted many of her books into successful
TV dramas and has also written several film scripts including the BAFTA
nominated screenplay for Pride and Prejudice.
Most recently Deborah has been working on a screenplay of the Diary
of Anne Frank that is due to be broadcast on BBC 1 this year while in
March her novel In the dark was long listed for the Orange Broadband
2008 prize for fiction.
Pupils participating
in the discussion day are encouraged to read Deborah Moggach's work
prior to the event.
