The Text Factor
KS3 reader development event

with guest speaker Sophie McKenzie

Thursday 29th April 2010: 9.30 a.m. - 12.00 noon

Course description: SLS is pleased to be running this event (previously known as “Children’s Choice”) in conjunction with the Red House Children’s Book Award, the only major book award in the UK that is judged entirely by children. The Award is divided into three categories, with each category having its own winner, and there is also an award for the overall winner. On the 29 April pupils will be discussing only the short-listed “books for older readers”.
Participating schools will be informed of the shortlist via email when it is announced on 23 February. There are usually three books on the shortlist and schools will be able to purchase any books from the shortlist through the Schools Library Service, or they can make their own arrangements for obtaining the books.
Our discussion day is based on the “books for older readers” shortlist of the Red House Children’s Book Award. Each school will be able to send six pupils to the discussion day. Pupils will be expected to have read all the books, and to be willing to discuss the titles with students from other schools in small groups. The session will include a talk by our guest speaker, the award-winning author Sophie McKenzie. Sophie has written “Blood Ties,” which won the RHCBA in 2009.
