Children's Art Day comes to Hertfordshire

Wednesday 8th July 2009

This year for Children's Art Day, Hertfordshire County Art Collection Schools Loan service held an Art Trail for Yr.6 students.

Children's Art Day, managed by Engage, the National Association for gallery education, takes place during Shine Week - a national schools festival celebrating talent in all young people.

Over the years Children's Art Day has received invaluable support from some of the country's most talented artists, including Antony Gormley, Cornelia Parker, Richard Wentworth and Bridget Riley. This year it has also received backing from Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London.

Our Art Trail event was organised to create a new opportunity for schools to work with and enjoy a selection of works from the County Art Collection, through a variety of art based activities. Eight schools (67 pupils) attended one, of two sessions, held in the morning and afternoon.

Each session was split into four activities. In 'Piece by piece' every child was given a square part of a much larger painting to copy. A wide range of interpretations appeared, but the complete piece was recognisably a copy of the original. The second activity - 'I spy' the children were given a selection of pictures showing a small detail of a larger picture, which they matched up to the originals. The third activity involved children piecing together picture segments and discussing what they thought, liked etc. about them. The final activity was a copy of half an artist's self-portrait. They had to complete the other half of the face in any style or colours they chose. We also had our very own Antony Gormley 'Living Statues' plinth which, after a rather tentative start proved to be a popular activity.

The children were each given a pack with a sketch pad and coloured pencils to take away with them.

Both the adults and the young people gave positive feedback on the sessions. "I thought the programme was excellent, the children had a variety of challenging and informative activities"

We hope to repeat the sessions at a later date for the schools that wanted to attend the event and were on the waiting list,
and also adapt it for other age groups.
